1st European Leaders' Conference

(1 September 1983) “Re-Evangelizing Europe for Christ” was the theme of the First European Leaders’ Conference held in Rome, September 22-26, 1983. Sixty leaders from 18 countries hailed the event as “very successful”, “challenging”, and “most encouraging”.

A meeting with the Pope

(1 July 1983) Fr. Fio Mascarenhas, S.J. and Fr. Tom Forrest C.Ss.R. of the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Office were privileged to meet with Pope John Paul II at Castel Gandolfo on July 19th, 1983.

Pan-African Leaders' Congress

(1 March 1983) Sixty joyful leaders from twelve English-speaking countries of Africa gathered in Nairobi, January 12th to 16th, 1983, to pray and share together about their Christian vocation to be “A Holy People, A Royal Priesthood, A Chosen Race”. Speakers at the Conference were Fr. Rufus Pereira of India, and Fathers Bob Faricy SJ, and Fio Mascarenhas SJ, of Rome.

ICCRO Council meets with Pope John Paul II

(1 January 1983) On the morning of Thursday, November 18th, 1982, the International Council of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal participated in the private morning Mass of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. At 6:45 sharp, Swiss guards conducted the small group through the Vatican courtyard of San Damaso to the Apostolic Palace, where an elevator brought them to the floor of the papal residence.

Meeting with Mother Teresa of Calcutta

(2 September 1982) Father Tom Forrest and Fr. Fio Masarenhas met recently in Rome with Mother Teresa of Calcutta, to share about worldwide priests’ retreat being planned in Rome for 1984. In the conversation, she immediately emphasized how we must begin now to fast and pray for the retreat’s success.

2nd Asian Leaders' Conference

(1 September 1982) One hundred and thirty leaders from 18 countries of Asia and Oceania gathered in Singapore, September 13th-17th, 1982, to share and pray about “Evangelizing Asia for Christ”.

Resignation of Episcopal Advisor

(2 March 1982) In early February, Cardinal Suenens of Brussels advised us of his decision to resign as Episcopal Advisor to the International Council of the Catholic Charismatic renewal. Cardinal Suenens has served as Episcopal Advisor to the International Office since it moved to Brussels, Belgium, in August, 1976, and to the International Council since it came into existence during the International Leaders’ Conference of Dublin, in June, 1978.

ICCRO meets with Pope John Paul II

(1 March 1982) On the morning of March 15th, 1982, the staff of the ICCRO was invited to attend the seven o’clock morning Mass of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II.

There are 111 countries in all. We would be anxious and interested in hearing about any other country of the world not listed here, which is also experiencing the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

Rome meeting of the movements of the Church

(1 September 1981) In April, 1980, the Council of Laity of the Vatican organized the first meeting of the spiritual movements of the Church, and at its conclusion, Bishop Cordes, vice-president of the Council. asked the movements tto continue to “develop bonds of communication and collaboration between themselves”.
